Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cooked chicken
Provides the main body and protein of the salad.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add creamy texture as the mashed yolks bind with the dressing.
Celery
Adds crisp texture that contrasts with the soft chicken and eggs.
Melted butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavor and smooths the mixture.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness, softening the texture of the salad.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the flavor and balances the richness.

The step that matters

Fold in the chopped celery and add vinegar to moisten the mixture.. Adding vinegar gradually and folding gently keeps the salad moist without making it soggy or breaking up the chicken and egg. Celery added too early or over-mixed can release water and turn limp.

Swap the mustard
