Apple Dumpling

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the dough

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, lard or butter, and coarse sea salt.

  3. Add enough water to form a soft dough that can be rolled out.

  4. Roll out the dough and slice your apples thin.

Assemble and cook

  1. Place the apples in the center of the dough, fold it over, and seal.

  2. Steam the dumplings for about 30 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Forms the dough structure that holds the apples and gives the dumplings their body.
Baking powder
Releases gas during cooking so the dough rises and becomes lighter.
Lard or butter
Adds fat that tenderises the dough and keeps it from becoming tough.
Apples
Provide the filling, adding moisture and fruity sweetness as they cook.

The step that matters

Seal the dumplings. If the dough edges are not pressed firmly closed, steam and juices can escape or leak during cooking, leaving the filling dry or the dumpling misshapen.

Swap the apple
