Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide starch that the yeast can ferment, and body to the liquid.
Hops
Add bitterness and aroma that balance the sweetness of the sugar.
Sugar
Feeds the yeast, supplying the sugars that become alcohol and carbonation.
Yeast
Converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide during fermentation.

The step that matters

When the mixture is nearly cold, add the hot yeast.. Yeast is killed by high heat, so the liquid must cool enough that the yeast survives and can start fermenting.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, sugar, ginger):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against hops, sugar, ginger. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
