Make and bake the loaf

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Veal
Forms the bulk of the loaf and gives it its meaty body.
Salt pork
Adds fat that keeps the lean veal moist during baking.
Eggs
Bind the mixture so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Crackers
Absorb liquid and fat, helping the loaf stay tender and hold together.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top brown while basting.

The step that matters

Basting during baking. Lean veal dries out easily in the oven. Regular basting with butter adds fat to the surface, keeping the loaf moist and promoting even browning.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (veal, pork, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Sagefits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against veal, pork, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
