What each ingredient does

Chickens
Provide the main body of the salad as cooked, chopped meat.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch to the salad.
Hard-boiled egg yolks
Mashed smooth, they make the dressing creamy and enrich the salad.
Sweet oil
Adds fat and moisture, carrying flavour and keeping the salad soft.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the flavour and balances the richness of the oil and yolks.

The step that matters

Add the sweet oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper just before serving.. Acid and salt draw moisture out of celery and meat over time, so dressing too early can make the salad watery and dull in texture. Adding it shortly before serving keeps the salad crisp and well seasoned.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, egg, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Dillfits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, egg, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
