Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body; their soft flesh softens and releases juice as they bake.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, helping the tomatoes brown and carry seasoning.
Brown sugar
Adds sweetness and caramelizes on the surface, deepening color and flavor.
Whipped cream
Adds a cool, creamy, rich topping that contrasts with the warm baked tomatoes.

The step that matters

Removing the lid for the last 10 minutes. The covered bake traps steam and keeps the tomatoes moist and pale. Uncovering lets surface moisture evaporate, so the sugar and butter can brown.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter, sugar, cream):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Leekfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, butter, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
