Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oranges
Provide the main orange flavor and fresh, slightly tart moisture.
Cold custard
Forms the creamy base that gives the ice cream its smooth body.
Sweetened whipped cream
Adds air and fat, making the frozen texture light and rich.
Rolled macaroon crumbs
Add almond-like sweetness and a slightly chewy, crumbly texture.
Sherry
Adds aromatic depth that complements the orange flavor.

The step that matters

Churn until half frozen before adding the macaroon crumbs. Stirring crumbs into a fully frozen mixture is hard to do evenly, and partly frozen cream keeps the crumbs distributed rather than sinking or clumping. Ice crystals stay small when the mix is churned, giving a smoother texture.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, sherry, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Pineapplefits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, sherry, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
