Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Smoked salmon
Provides the main flesh and smoky flavor of the dish.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture to the cooked salmon.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the rich, smoky fish.
Vinegar
Acidity in the parboiling water that helps firm the fish.

The step that matters

Broiling until nicely browned. Salmon is already cooked through by smoking and parboiling, so the broiling step is mainly for browning. Leaving it too long dries the strips and toughens the flesh, so watch them closely under the heat.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (salmon, butter, lemon, pepper, vinegar):

  1. Dillfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Tarragonfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against salmon, butter, lemon, pepper, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
