Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Shape the loaf

  1. In a bowl, mix the eggs, rolled crackers, pepper, salt, and chopped beef until well combined.

  2. Mold the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in a baking dish.

  3. Spread bits of butter on top of the loaf.

Bake and serve

  1. In a separate bowl, mix the butter with boiling water and baste the loaf with this mixture while baking.

  2. Bake carefully until cooked through, then slice when cool.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chopped lean beef
Forms the bulk of the loaf and gives it its meaty flavor and texture.
Eggs
Bind the mixture so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Rolled crackers
Absorb juices and help keep the loaf tender and moist.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that keeps the top of the loaf moist and flavorful.

The step that matters

Bake carefully until cooked through, then slice when cool. Ground meat must reach a safe internal temperature throughout, and the loaf needs to rest so its juices settle and it holds together when sliced.
