What each ingredient does

Squash
Forms the bulk of the filling and gives the pie its body and flavor.
Egg
Helps the filling set and hold its shape as it cooks.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and balances the mild squash flavor.
Flour
Thickens the filling so it holds together when cut.
Milk
Thins the squash mixture to a pourable consistency and adds moisture.
