Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pearl barley
Forms the body of the soup and thickens the broth as it cooks.
Turnip
Adds mild sweetness and soft texture to the soup.
Carrot
Adds natural sweetness and colour, and softens as it simmers.
Onion
Adds aroma and savoury depth to the stock.

The step that matters

Boil the barley for 2 hours in soft water. Pearl barley is tough and needs a long, steady simmer to become tender. Stopping early leaves a chewy grain, while a hard, rapid boil can break grains apart and cloud the broth.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (barley, turnip, carrot):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Beetrootfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against barley, turnip, carrot. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
