Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Coats the chicken so it browns, and later thickens the gravy.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and moisture, building the body of the gravy as they cook down.
Onion
Adds sweet, savory depth to the simmering liquid as it softens.
Celery
Contributes aromatic flavor to the gravy during the long simmer.
Chicken
Provides the main protein, becoming tender as it simmers slowly in the liquid.

The step that matters

Thicken the gravy with flour mixed smooth in water. Flour added directly to hot liquid clumps. Mixing it smooth in cold water first lets the starch disperse evenly, so the gravy thickens without lumps.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, flour, onion, pepper, celery, carrot, biscuit):

  1. Turnipfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Spinachfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, flour, onion, pepper, celery, carrot, biscuit. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
