Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground rice
Thickens the soup as its starch swells and gelatinises during simmering.
Forcemeat
Adds body and savoury richness to the soup as it cooks.
Bones
Release gelatine and flavour into the stock during long simmering.
Celery
Contributes aromatic flavour to the stock.

The step that matters

Thicken with ground rice. Ground rice starch needs to simmer long enough to swell and thicken the soup fully. Adding it too late or boiling hard can leave the soup thin or unevenly thickened, so keep the heat gentle and stir well.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, ham, celery, pepper, rice):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Onionthe original
