Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides savoury flavour and substance as it browns and then becomes tender during long simmering.
Bacon
Adds smoky, salty fat that flavours the pot as it renders and browns.
Potatoes
Soften during simmering and thicken the broth slightly as their starch releases.
Rice
Releases starch during gentle cooking, giving the soup more body.
Onion
Softens and browns in the fat, building sweetness and depth of flavour.

The step that matters

Browning the bacon, beef and onion. Browning creates savoury flavour through the Maillard reaction. Crowding the pot or stopping too early leaves the mixture steamed and pale, so the broth tastes flat.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, carrot, potato, rice, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits about as well
