Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Suet
Adds fat that keeps the pudding moist and rich as it steams.
Bananas
Provide sweetness, moisture and a soft, tender body to the pudding.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and help set the pudding as it cooks.
Wholemeal flour
Forms the structure of the pudding, giving it body as it sets.

The step that matters

Let it stand for at least 1 hour. Standing after the boiling milk is added lets the flour and bran fully hydrate and swell, which softens the texture. Skipping this rest can leave the pudding gritty and uneven.

Swap the banana

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, egg, flour, milk):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Raisinfits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Bananathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, egg, flour, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
