What each ingredient does

Chocolate
Provides the flavor and body of the drink as it melts into the liquid.
Milk
Adds creaminess and body, and carries the chocolate flavor.

The step that matters

Whipping to a froth. Beating air into the hot liquid creates the foam that gives the drink its light texture. Whisking should be brisk and continuous so the froth forms before the drink cools.
