Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Browning the meat builds deep savory flavor that carries into the broth as it simmers.
Onions
Frying until browned adds sweetness and savory depth to the soup base.
Carrot
Adds natural sweetness and body to the simmering broth.
Turnip
Contributes mild sweetness and body to the simmering broth.

The step that matters

Skimming the foam. Foam is coagulated protein and impurities that rise during simmering. Skimming it regularly keeps the broth clear and clean-tasting, and a gentle simmer prevents the liquid from clouding.
