Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Caramelised sweetness and body as they brown in butter, giving the sauce its flavour base.
Butter
Carries the onions as they cook and adds richness to the sauce.
Beef gravy
Forms the liquid base of the sauce and carries its savoury flavour.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the rich, savoury sauce.

The step that matters

Cook the onions until light brown. Onions cooked gently until golden develop sweetness and depth, while cooking too fast or too dark can make them bitter and scorched, weakening the sauce.

  4. Limefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, butter, beef, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
