What each ingredient does

Muffins
Provide the base that toasts to a crisp, golden exterior while the inside warms.
Soft butter
Adds fat and richness, melting into the warm, toasted surface.

The step that matters

Holding the muffins at a distance from the fire. Holding the muffins a little away from the fire lets heat warm them through before the outside burns. Close heat browns the surface too fast and leaves the centre cold.
