Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Rice
- Forms the outer casing that holds the apple and keeps its shape while boiling.
- Apples
- Provide the filling, becoming soft and sweet as they cook inside the rice.
The step that matters
Tie the parcel loosely in a cloth. Rice swells as it absorbs water and starch sets as it cooks. A loose tie leaves room for expansion so the parcel does not burst or lose its shape, while still holding the rice snugly around the apple.
Swap the apple
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, sugar, butter, wine, sauce):
- Vanillafits about as well
- Grapefits about as well
- Coconutfits about as well
- Applethe original
Fit is the average pairing score against rice, sugar, butter, wine, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
