Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mushrooms
Form the main body of the dish and release moisture as they stew.
Butter
Carries the flavor and helps the mushrooms brown gently in the pan.
Flour
Thickens the stewing liquid into a sauce that clings to the mushrooms.
Gravy or beef broth
Supplies the liquid base and savory depth for the mushroom sauce.
Bread
Provides a crisp, toasted base that holds the mushroom mixture.

The step that matters

Stirring the flour until lightly browned. Flour must be cooked briefly in the fat so it loses its raw taste and thickens evenly; stirring prevents scorching and lumps before the liquid is added.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mushroom, butter, flour, beef, lemon, bread):

  1. Thymefits better
