Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Coffee beans
Provide the main flavour and aroma when ground and brewed with hot water.
Water
Extracts the soluble flavour compounds from the ground coffee.

The step that matters

Wetting the grounds before the full pour. Pouring a small amount of boiling water over the grounds first lets them wet evenly, so the later water extracts flavour uniformly rather than channelling through dry pockets.

Swap the beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (coffee, milk):

  1. Cocoafits better
  2. Peanutfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
  4. Beansthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against coffee, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
