To Boil Asparagus

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Scrape the stems of the asparagus lightly, removing 1 to 2 inches of the green tips.

  2. Place the cleaned asparagus in cold water until ready.

  3. Tie the asparagus into equal-sized bunches and cut the large ends evenly.

Cook and serve

  1. Boil plenty of water and add the asparagus, cooking until tender (about 20 to 25 minutes).

  2. Toast the bread on both sides until golden brown, then remove the crust.

  3. Dip the toast quickly into the boiling water, then place the asparagus on top with the tips meeting in the center.

  4. Serve with rich melted butter and optionally add vinegar to the sauce.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Asparagus
Forms the dish itself; cooking softens its fibers into a tender texture.
Bread
A toasted base that soaks up some cooking water and supports the spears.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavor through the sauce.

The step that matters

Cooking the asparagus until tender. Prolonged heat breaks down the asparagus's cell walls, so overcooked spears turn soft and mushy. Their green color also fades as the chlorophyll breaks down. Checking tenderness early keeps the texture firm and the color bright.

Swap the asparagus

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, butter, vinegar):

  1. Shallotfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Asparagusthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, butter, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
