Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Adds richness and helps the bread brown and crisp while frying.
English cheese
Melts over the bread to form a savory, binding topping.
Ham
Adds savory, salty flavor to the topping.
Mustard
Adds sharp, tangy flavor that balances the rich cheese and butter.

The step that matters

Fry without turning. Frying in butter without turning lets one side brown and crisp while the topping stays on top. Turning can knock off the cheese and ham and break the squares apart.
