Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms a starchy coating that cooks into the white, snowy shell around each orange.
Oranges
Provide the core fruit and its bright, tangy flavour inside the wrapped ball.

The step that matters

Boil the wrapped oranges for 1.5 hours. The rice must be wrapped firmly and tied securely so it holds its shape during the long boil. Loose wrapping can let the rice spread or fall away from the orange.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Raisinfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
