Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Their moisture softens during stewing, leaving the pieces tender and giving the sauce body.
Flour
Dusting the cucumbers helps them brown in the butter and lightly thickens the gravy.
Butter
Frying in butter gives the cucumbers a golden surface and rich flavour.
Brown gravy
Forms the sauce the cucumbers stew in, adding savoury depth and moisture.

The step that matters

Stewing the cucumbers gently. Gentle heat lets the cucumbers become tender without breaking down. A hard boil can make them mushy and cloud the gravy.
