Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the body of the dish and becomes tender when boiled.
Butter
Adds richness and coats the cabbage, carrying flavour in the finished dish.

The step that matters

Pressing out excess water before stewing. Cabbage holds a lot of water after boiling. If it is not pressed and drained well, the excess water dilutes the butter and keeps the cabbage soggy instead of letting it stew and turn dry and tender.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
