Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the meat flavour and gelatin-rich body that forms the broth's character.
Cold water
Extracts flavour from the beef as it heats and forms the liquid base of the broth.

The step that matters

Boil for 5 minutes only. Boiling the meat too long or too hard can cloud the broth and toughen the meat. A brief boil releases flavour while keeping the liquid clearer.

Swap the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, clove, tomato, parsley):

  1. Avocadofits about as well
  2. Limefits about as well
  3. Lemonthe original
  4. Cherryfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, clove, tomato, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
