Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main body and savoury meaty flavour of the loaf.
Bread crumbs
Absorb moisture and help the mixture hold together with a tender texture.
Eggs
Bind the mixture and set during baking to give it structure.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and moisture, and helps browning in the pie dish.
Gravy or cream
Adds moisture so the meat stays tender rather than dry as it bakes.

The step that matters

Pour the mixture into the prepared pie dish. The mixture must be evenly packed so it cooks through and sets firmly. Pressing it down without air pockets helps it hold its shape when turned out.

Swap the thyme

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, bread, butter, cream, parsley, egg, pepper):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Tarragonfits about as well
  3. Thymethe original
  4. Marjoramfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, bread, butter, cream, parsley, egg, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
