Buchanan Carrot Soup

Ingredients

2 quarts good brown stock (or strong beef broth)
1 tablespoon fine curry powder
Cayenne pepper to taste
6 to 8 ounces Patna rice, boiled dry and tender
Optional: cold vegetables, cut small

Directions

In a pot, combine the brown stock and bring to a boil.
Mix the curry powder with a little liquid until smooth, then add to the soup and boil for 10 minutes.
Alternatively, season with cayenne pepper and stir in the boiled rice.
Let the soup sit by the fire for 10 minutes without simmering.
Serve immediately, adding cold vegetables or curry paste if desired.
For variation, substitute pearl barley for rice, boiling it until extremely tender.
