Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cooked beef
Provides the main body and meaty flavour of the potted mixture.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, spreadable texture as it sets.
Gravy
Adds moisture and savoury depth to the beef.
Nutmeg
Contributes warm, aromatic spice that complements the meat.

The step that matters

Pound the beef until smooth. Pounding breaks the meat into fine fibres so it blends evenly with the seasoning and fat, giving a smooth spread rather than a coarse, dry texture. Adding the seasoning gradually helps it distribute evenly.
