Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beans
Form the body of the soup and thicken it as they break down during long simmering.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and flavour, and moisture that helps the soup blend smoothly.
Milk
Adds richness and a mellow, smooth texture to the finished soup.
Oil
Adds fat, which carries flavour and gives the soup a rounder mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Mashing the mixture through a colander. Pushing the cooked beans through a colander breaks them into a smooth purée. Skipping or rushing this leaves the soup grainy and uneven in texture.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beans, tomato, milk):

  1. Cuminfits better
  2. Oreganofits better
  3. Corianderfits better
  4. Parsleythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beans, tomato, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
