Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Provide the main body, sweetness and color of the soup as they soften.
Broth
Forms the liquid base that carries the flavor and cooks the carrots.
Onions
Fried in butter, they add savory depth and aroma to the base.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, velvety texture to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Simmering until the carrots are fully soft. Carrots must be fully tender before straining; undercooked pieces stay fibrous and can't be pushed through a fine sieve into a smooth texture.

Swap the tomato

The recipe marks tomato as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, onion, beef, butter, mace, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Turnipfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against carrot, onion, beef, butter, mace, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
