Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Small beer
Forms the liquid base and adds malty, slightly bitter flavor to the gravy.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the onion brown, building savory flavor.
Onion
Provides sweetness and savory depth when browned.
Walnut pickle
Adds tangy, savory flavor that sharpens the gravy.
Lemon peel
Contributes bright citrus aroma.

The step that matters

Frying the onion until brown. Browning the onion triggers Maillard reactions and caramelization, which create deeper, richer flavor. Pale onion gives a flatter, sweeter gravy with less savory depth.
