Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Is the vegetable being cooked, so its tenderness and mild flavour are the main result.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, savoury coating to the cooked cabbage.

The step that matters

Drain the cabbage well. Cabbage holds a lot of water, and leftover moisture dilutes the butter, pepper and sauce and makes the dish watery. Pressing out the excess keeps the flavour concentrated.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, cream, sauce):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Onionfits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, cream, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
