Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Spinach
Forms the bulk of the dish; wilting and chopping give it a soft, spoonable texture.
Rich gravy or meat juice
Adds savoury depth and moisture to the spinach.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Pressing out the moisture after draining. Spinach holds a lot of water. If it is not pressed dry, the added gravy and butter will thin out and the dish will turn watery rather than thick and spoonable.

Swap the spinach

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (meat, butter, pepper, sugar):
