Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Dissolves into the hot water to provide sweetness and body.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that balances the sweetness of the sugar.
Fine brandy or jamaica rum
Provides the spirit base and warming aroma.
Peach brandy or cordial
Adds fruity aroma and extra flavor, added just before serving.

The step that matters

Dissolving the sugar in boiling water. Sugar dissolves far more readily in hot water than cold, so pouring boiling water over it and mixing well prevents grainy sugar settling at the bottom of the punch.
