Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean beef
Provides the meat flavor and body that the gravy is built on.
Onions
Add sweetness and savory depth as they cook slowly into the liquid.
Carrot
Adds subtle sweetness and body to the simmered liquid.

The step that matters

Brown the beef slowly. Slow browning develops deep flavor through the Maillard reaction on the meat surface. Rushing it over high heat can scorch the beef and leave bitter notes in the finished gravy.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, butter, pepper, onion):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Chivefits about as well
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Carrotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, butter, pepper, onion. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
