Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mutton
Provides the meat that becomes tender through long, gentle simmering.
Potatoes
Soften as they cook and thicken the broth slightly with their starch.
Onions
Turn sweet and soft during simmering, adding savoury depth to the stew.

The step that matters

Simmer gently after boiling. A rolling boil toughens meat proteins and can break up the potatoes. Keeping the liquid at a gentle simmer lets the mutton become tender and the vegetables hold their shape.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mutton, pepper, potato):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Tomatofits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against mutton, pepper, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
