Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Cabbage
- Forms the body of the soup and becomes tender during the long boil.
- Butter
- Adds richness and a silky mouthfeel to the broth.
- Milk
- Adds creaminess and mild sweetness to the soup.
- Bread
- Soaks up the broth and gives the soup substance when served over it.
The step that matters
Adding the milk after the long boil. Milk can curdle or scorch when kept at a hard boil for a long time. Adding it near the end, then bringing it only to a boil, keeps it smooth and prevents it from separating.
