Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Provide the main flavor and soft body of the sauce once boiled and chopped.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavor and giving the sauce a smooth mouthfeel.
Milk
Forms the liquid base of the sauce and adds creaminess and mild sweetness.
Bread crumbs
Thicken the milk as they absorb liquid and soften during slow cooking.

The step that matters

Cook slowly for 5 minutes. Milk scorches easily on direct heat and can stick or curdle if boiled hard. Gentle cooking lets the bread crumbs swell evenly and thicken the sauce smoothly.
