Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the bulk of the dish and absorbs the water and butter as it cooks.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth mouthfeel to the grains.
Turmeric
Gives the rice its yellow colour and a mild, earthy aroma.

The step that matters

Boil until the rice looks dry. Cooking over moderate heat until surface water is gone lets the grains absorb the liquid and finish tender. Stopping too early leaves the rice wet and sticky, while cooking too long can dry it out and scorch the base.

Swap the cinnamon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, turmeric, pepper, butter):

  1. Cardamomfits better
  2. Cuminfits about as well
  3. Cinnamonthe original
  4. Parsleyfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, turmeric, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
