Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Brussels sprouts
Form the main body of the dish; cooking softens their fibrous texture until tender.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavour and coating the sprouts smoothly.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the buttery sauce and balances the sprouts' bitterness.

The step that matters

Boil uncovered until the sprouts are tender. Overcooking breaks down the sprouts' cell walls and releases sulfur compounds, causing a strong smell and mushy texture. Checking for tenderness early keeps them firm yet cooked through.
