Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Adds fat that makes the biscuits rich and gives a short, tender bite.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the biscuits brown lightly in the oven.
Ground rice
Gives a crisp, slightly sandy texture and body to the dough.
Baking powder
Releases gas in the dough to give the biscuits a little lift.
Eggs
Bind the dough and add moisture and structure.

The step that matters

Roll the dough thinly. Thin dough dries and crisps evenly in the oven. Thick rounds stay soft and doughy in the centre, so the biscuits will not turn out crisp.

Swap the vanilla

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, rice, egg):

  1. Vanillathe original
  2. Coconutfits about as well
  3. Lemonfits less well
  4. Raisinfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, rice, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
