Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Milk
Forms the liquid base and softens the crumbs as it is absorbed.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the liquid and swell, thickening the sauce.
Onion
Gives aromatic flavour as it infuses into the milk.
Cream
Adds richness and a smoother, silkier mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Stirring the crumbs over low heat until thickened. Bread crumbs swell as their starch absorbs the hot milk. Too much heat or too little stirring can scorch the milk solids or leave lumps, so keep the heat low and stir steadily.
