Bake and finish

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pork
Forms the main filling and provides the meaty texture and flavor of the pie.
Hot crust
Shapes the pie and holds the filling while it bakes into a sturdy, browned case.
Salt
Seasons the pork and helps draw out flavor from the meat.

The step that matters

Ensure the pork is thoroughly cooked. Raw pork must reach a safe internal temperature throughout, and a large filled pie can stay cool in the center if the heat is not controlled, so the slow reduced-heat bake matters.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pork, pepper):

  1. Sagethe original
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Marjoramfits about as well
  4. Parsleyfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against pork, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
