Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavor through the soup.
Onions
Build a sweet, savory aromatic base as they soften gently.
Carrots
Add natural sweetness and body to the vegetable base.
Turnips
Contribute mild, slightly peppery flavor and body to the broth.
Toasted bread
Thickens the soup slightly and adds a toasted, roasted aroma.

The step that matters

Cooking the vegetables gently. Stirring gently over medium heat softens the vegetables without browning them. Browning would add bitter, caramelized flavors that change the soup's clean, mild taste.
