Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cod fish
Forms the main body of the dish, cooking into firm, flaky slices.
Flour
Dries the fish surface and helps form a light, browned crust when fried.
Beaten egg
Acts as a binder so the bread crumbs adhere to the fish in the alternative coating.
Fine bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden coating that browns during frying.
Melted butter
Adds richness and fat that complements the fried fish.

The step that matters

Fry until an even brown on both sides. Fish is delicate and cooks quickly, so overcooking dries it out. Even browning depends on steady heat and enough fat, and turning the slices only once helps the crust set evenly.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (fish, flour, egg, bread, butter, anchovy, sauce):

  1. Capersfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
