Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the starchy outer coating that sets around each apple as it cooks.
Apples
Provide the core filling, softening and sweetening as they cook inside the rice.
Sugar
Adds sweetness to the finished snowballs.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the serving.

The step that matters

Tie each apple and rice parcel in a cloth loosely.. Rice swells as it cooks, so a loose wrap leaves room for expansion while still holding the rice snugly around the apple. A tight cloth can crack or squeeze the parcel apart.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, sugar, butter, wine, sauce):

  1. Vanillafits about as well
  2. Grapefits about as well
  3. Coconutfits about as well
