Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Soften and thicken the mixture, adding body and starch to the dressing.
Bread
Soaks up the cooking liquid and gives the dressing its soft, moist body.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavour and keeping the dressing moist.

The step that matters

Soak the bread in the boiling water. Bread must absorb enough hot liquid to soften evenly. Dry patches stay chewy, while over-soaking makes the dressing soggy and heavy.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (liver, pepper, butter, bread):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits about as well
  3. Onionfits about as well
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against liver, pepper, butter, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
